It’s been a tough haul for Mayor Scott Gillingham during his first term. With homeless encampments at an all-time high and incidents of crime and public disorder widespread, he can only find solace in the small victories that have emerged. One has been happily noticed by transit riders.
The crackdown on fare jumpers — sometimes by screening people at the stop before they board, other times by teams hopping on to escort scofflaws off the bus — has reduced the number of disruptive individuals creating a bad experience for paying customers. There are still some folks getting on without paying, but according to Sun readers it’s not nearly as common as in past years. They appreciate the commitment to improving safety on transit.
