GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The Green Bay Metro Fire Department is urging you to clean the lint out of your clothes dryer.

Local fire officials tell us the leading cause of home dryer fires is failing to clean them, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

The NFPA says dryer fires are more likely in the fall and winter, peaking in January.

To prevent fires:

Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional

Don’t use the dryer without a lint filter

Clean the lint filter before and after each cycle

Don’t forget to clean the back of the dryer, where lint can build up

The NFPA also suggests making sure the air exhaust vent isn’t restricted and the outdoor flap will open when the dryer is operating.
