Saying someone needs to “lower the temperature,” former U.S. Sen. John E. Sununu of Rye announced Wednesday he’s mounting a Republican primary bid to try and fill an open U.S. Senate seat in 2026.

Sununu, 61, made the announcement with a 90-second video in which he said deciding to run in what will be his first election in 18 years “surprised myself.”

“Why would anyone subject themselves to everything going on there right now?” Sununu asked rhetorically.

“Well, somebody has to step up and lower the temperature. Somebody has to get things done; laser focus on the economy, jobs, our debt and making our lives more affordable.
