INDIANAPOLIS – Have you seen a Mediterranean gecko in your neck of the woods?

If so, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources would like to hear about it. The Mediterranean gecko (Hemidactylus turcicus) is an exotic lizard species that has been spotted at different locations around the state.

The lizard is harmless and native to the Mediterranean region of Europe and northern Africa. They’re typically four to five inches long with tan or pink coloring and brown blotches on their body.

Other notable features include “warty” skin, a banded tail and large, bulging eyes with vertical pupils. They’re typically active at night and tend to gather near outdoor lights or inside buildings. They feed on insects and spiders during the warm season.
