Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes filed a lawsuit on Tuesday aiming to force House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to swear in Democrat Adelita Grijalva nearly one month after she won her special election.

Grijalva won her special election in Arizona last month to replace her late father, former Rep. Raúl Grijalva. Since then, Johnson has declined to swear her into Congress, demanding that Senate Democrats reopen the government before he swears her into the lower chamber.

Critics have argued that Johnson has refused to swear Grijalva in because she would be the final person needed to force a vote on releasing files related to Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking case. Johnson has rejected that accusation , saying he is just waiting until the House is back in session.
