GRASS VALLEY, Calif. —

A pedestrian was hit and killed by a pickup truck near a church along Highway 49 in Grass Valley on Tuesday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded to the crash around 9:30 p.m. on Highway 49 at Bethel Church Way.

Officials said the man who was struck died at the scene. He has not been identified.

CHP said the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. DUI is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

Officials said the crash occurred in a portion of Highway 49 that is not well-lit. It's unclear why the man was in the roadway.

Highway 49 was closed in the area, but has since reopened.
