ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Supreme Court sided with transgender athletes on Wednesday, Oct. 22, in Cooper v. USA Powerlifting, arguing JayCee Cooper, of Minneapolis, was discriminated against based on gender identity, violating the Minnesota Human Rights Act — but sent part of the case back to trial.
The ruling comes four years after Cooper, then 35, sued USA Powerlifting in 2021, alleging the organization engaged in discriminatory practices by prohibiting her from competing in 2019.
In March of 2024, the Minnesota Court of Appeals sent the case back to the Ramsey County District Court before the Supreme Court decided to take up the case in July 2024.
