SALT LAKE CITY — An overturned semi and a hazmat spill on westbound Interstate 84 prior to U.S. Highway 89 led officials to close a portion of I-84 on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Mountain Green Fire Protection District, the semitruck was carrying multiple totes of liquid fertilizer potassium hydroxide, each tote holding around 250 gallons of the fertilizer.
For several hours, traffic was backed up between the power plant and the city of Mountain Green along I-84. By 4:30 p.m., the Utah Department of Transportation said all lanes were open with heavy delays that remained throughout Mountain Green.
“This is the 23rd semi since 2020 to crash in this exact spot,” the fire protection district said. “We remain concerned that a more serious Haz Mat spill from other semis plying the canyon
