The big red MAGA-style baseball caps emblazoned with the slogan ‘build, baby, build’ were a striking feature of the recent Labour Conference.

Housing minister Steve Reed has taken those three words on as his mantra - and they were a prominent part of a conference speech which saw him gallop onto the stage to the sound of Starship’s ‘We Built This City’.

After hurling more branded merchandise into the crowd, Inside Housing reported that he then cracked open a bottle because “all builders need a beer”.

Reed’s gung ho approach to one of the country’s most pressing problems might seem cringey, but he insists ‘build, baby, build’ is the only way to tackle the housing crisis.
