A man wanted in connection with a murder in Brampton and an Amber Alert was shot and killed by police in Niagara Falls early Wednesday. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. at a gas station located at the intersection of Thorold Stone and Montrose Roads.
Niagara Regional Police reported that officers located Anthony Deschepper, 38, inside a vehicle. Following an interaction with the police, Deschepper was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that no officers were injured during the confrontation. The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The manhunt for Deschepper began after a woman was fatally shot in a parking lot near Airport Road and Queen Street in Brampton shortly before 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Peel Regional Police found the woman suffering from gunshot wounds, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. While her identity has not been released, police believe the shooting was a case of intimate partner violence.
Deschepper fled the scene in a black 2024 Nissan Kicks with Quebec license plate FRV4520, taking his one-year-old daughter, Skyla-Rose Deschepper, with him. An Amber Alert was issued, and the child was later found safe with a family member.
On Tuesday evening, Niagara Regional Police advised residents in the Crystal Beach area of Fort Erie to shelter in place, as they believed Deschepper was in the vicinity. They urged residents to secure their homes and not to open doors to strangers. By Wednesday morning, police confirmed that Deschepper was dead following the encounter at the gas station.
Constable Rich Hingley of the Niagara Regional Police stated that they had received information leading them to believe Deschepper was armed. He explained that the shelter-in-place order was issued to ensure public safety while officers searched for him. Deschepper was a passenger in a Chevrolet SUV at the time of the shooting, and a woman driving the vehicle was taken into custody. Charges against her are pending, and she may face accessory and abetting charges.
The Nissan Kicks that Deschepper was initially driving has been recovered. The SIU is collecting evidence, including video footage and witness statements, to understand the events leading up to the shooting. SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette confirmed that only one officer discharged their weapon during the incident.
Deschepper had a history of firearms offenses and was previously identified as a suspect in a shooting incident in Brampton. He was wanted on several charges, including unauthorized possession of a firearm. Investigations by the SIU, Niagara Regional Police, and Peel Regional Police are ongoing.
