ALBANY — THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN DIRECTLY THREATENS NEW YORKERS’ ABILITY TO HEAT THEIR HOMES at a time when temperatures are falling, says Governor Kathy Hochul, who is blaming the Republican party for the stalemate.

Gov. Hochul on Wednesday, Oct. 22 urged Washington Republicans to end the prolonged shutdown, now in its fourth week, and act quickly to approve funding to support New York’s federally funded Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). This critical program helps more than 1.5 million New York households pay for utilities or fuel delivery during cold weather months, providing more than $287 million in heating assistance. Within New York City, 968,000 households were served, receiving $54 million in assistance, according to the governor’s office.
