(CNN) - Walmart is halting job offers for applicants who need H-1B visas to work in the United States.

The pause comes after President Donald Trump announced a $100,000 fee for the visas, which are used to hire highly skilled foreign workers.

Walmart is the nation’s largest private-sector employer with more than 2,000 H-1B visa holders working for the company.

Many of them work in tech and e-commerce roles that help Walmart compete with Amazon.

The White House argued the new fee will curb abuse of the system.
