The ministry of electronics and information technology ( MeitY ) on Wednesday laid out a clear framework to identify, label, and regulate deepfakes and other synthetically generated information. The same has been done by proposing a fresh set of amendments to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

The proposal marks the first time that synthetically generated information has been given a legal definition under IT law, signalling a major shift in how digital content will be treated when created or modified by artificial intelligence.

The government’s reasoning is straightforward. Deepfake audio, videos, and images, created using generative AI, have rapidly evolved as powerful tools of deception.
