NORTH HERO, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) - Vermont State Police said that they were investigating after a 71-year-old Montpelier man was found dead in Lake Champlain on Wednesday.

According to initial reports, two men set out in a single canoe on Tuesday afternoon, about 2:30 p.m., from the east side of North Hero, near the Hero's Welcome Lake Store.

Knight Island is about a mile and a half east of North Hero. Police said that they have received information that the canoe overturned near the island later in the afternoon.

Both men were reportedly wearing personal flotation devices, and one man was able to swim to the shore of Knight Island, where he reportedly spent the night at the caretaker's house. He then reportedly found a second canoe and rowed back to North Hero on Wednesday morning, where
