LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Families who rely on the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are in danger of losing that help at the end of the month. With the government shutdown, money to fund SNAP in November isn’t available.

It’s a situation food banks are preparing for, but without help from Washington, it’s unknown how long they can keep people from going hungry.

In Kentucky, roughly 600,000 people receive SNAP benefits each month. According to the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, on average, families received $337 in assistance in September. Children and older adults make up the largest age groups of recipients.
