CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday that it reached an agreement with the University of Virginia over its handling of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

Under the agreement, UVA will adhere to the DOJ’s " Guidance for Recipients of Federal Funding Regarding Unlawful Discrimination ," which the DOJ says will ensure UVA's programs, admissions processes and hiring practices are not forms of "unlawful racial discrimination."

As part of the agreement, UVA must submit quarterly reports to the DOJ through 2028, with UVA’s president personally certifying compliance each quarter.

University of Virginia Interim President Paul Mahoney wrote a letter to the university community Wednesday.
