When it comes to supporting speed cameras in Niagara, the goal isn’t making money; it’s slowing traffic, St. Catharines Mayor Mat Siscoe says.

Siscoe was speaking to listeners in a live telephone town hall session about the city budget Tuesday night and said all the dollars the municipality gets from speed camera fines go into traffic-calming measures, such as speed humps or lane narrowing.

“Ultimately, the only goal is to slow the traffic down. But when we do collect revenue, that revenue doesn’t just go in general coffers. We are using it to build up the roads so that they slow the traffic down as well,” he said, answering a listener’s question about the speed camera program.

“And I think that should ultimately be the goal for everybody.”
