GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Alachua County Support Services and community faith-based organizations held their annual “Honoring the Departed” ceremony at Evergreen Cemetery on Wednesday.

The ceremony memorializes individuals who were unclaimed, abandoned, or unknown at the time of their death.

The memorial provides the community with an opportunity to honor those who were buried without a service.

“It’s honoring those who went either unclaimed, or homeless, or family did not have the financial means to bury their loved ones,” said Satori Days, Community Stabilization Program Manager. “So, we took this opportunity to honor those and recognize those that were buried and acknowledge them. And make sure our community knows that they are never forgotten.”
