LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
For nearly a century, Waverly Hills Sanatorium has stood atop its hill in south Louisville — a towering reminder of both Kentucky's medical history and its haunted lore.
But for co-owner Tina Mattingly, the story of Waverly Hills is not one of death and fear, but of life, hope, and preservation.
"Waverly Hills was a tuberculosis hospital. This building here opened in October of 1926," Mattingly said. "It had a capacity of about 500 patients, but they did go over that, and it closed for good in 1962 as a tuberculosis hospital."
Mattingly's connection to the landmark is deeply personal.
"[My husband's] father worked here. My great-grandfather helped build it. And I have family that were patients here," she said. "Some lived, some died. It’s just our heritage, that mean
