More than a decade since it was first formally proposed, a new north–south highway through Perth’s northern corridor could still be years away from becoming a reality.

Planning and preparatory studies for the first stage of the Whiteman Yanchep Highway, which would run from Gnangara Road to Neaves Road, began in 2016, however construction work is yet to commence.

Despite the seeming lack of progress on the project, the State Government has quietly been progressing early planning works.

Late last year, the State Government established a Planning Control Area over land between Gnangara Road and Neaves Road to protect lands required for the future highway and an extension of Flynn Drive.

This protection will be in place for five years.
