1Newark, NJ – Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill is under fire after appearing alongside activist and former congressional candidate Chigozie Onyema, a vocal supporter of the “defund the police” movement, during a weekend door-knocking event. Joining them was Maryland Governor Wes Moore.

Sherrill, who has repeatedly described herself as “a strong partner for law enforcement,” joined Onyema and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka during the campaign stop, drawing sharp criticism from police groups and political opponents.

The event, aimed at energizing voters in Essex County, has reignited debate over Sherrill’s stance on public safety and policing in the state.
