Walmart is making a major technological change that will soon affect how shoppers buy its products. The retailer has announced a partnership with OpenAI, offering items directly to consumers within ChatGPT, the popular artificial intelligence chatbot.

“For many years now, eCommerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses. That is about to change,” Doug McMillon, president and CEO of Walmart Inc., said in a statement, adding that the new AI experience will be “multi-media, personalized and contextual.”

According to a press release, AI will learn and predict customers’ needs, turning shopping from a reactive experience into a proactive one — what Walmart calls agentic commerce. The partnership will allow Walmart customers and Sam’s Club members
