ST. PAUL, Minn. (GRAY) – As of Wednesday, the federal government has now been shut down for three weeks. A stalemate continues in Washington as both parties appear dug in on their respective priorities, despite the shuttered federal government.
The main point of contention remains the expiration of healthcare premium tax credits. The credits allow people with low incomes to pay significantly less for their insurance premiums.
The credits are set to expire at the end of the year if not acted on by Congress. Democrats hope that by withholding votes on a continuing resolution, they can force Republicans to compromise. GOP Leaders have indicated they’re open to negotiating, but only once Democrats vote to reopen the government.
