DES MOINES, Iowa (Gray Media Iowa Capitol Bureau) - At least 1,400 Iowans are going without pay during the partial government shutdown that started three weeks ago, with the number threatening to grow if the shutdown continues.
The Iowa National Guard has furloughed 700 members since the government shutdown began. Jackie Schmillen, Public Affairs officer for the National Guard, said the number could increase if the shutdown extends into next week.
“We have nearly 3,000 members that could see no money coming in if something doesn’t change by the end of the month,” Schmillen said.
Schmillen added that services are available for military members who need financial assistance.
