SACO, Maine — Federal employees reached the 22nd day without pay Wednesday as the government shutdown continues, and many either furloughed or working without pay make some unable to pay for food and necessities.

Food banks across the country are supporting federal workers who are directly impacted by the shutdown, including the Saco Food Pantry. Saco Food Pantry president John White said federal workers can come in and get what they need, regardless of where they are coming from.

A report from Congress said nearly 12,000 people in Maine work for the federal government.

Leaders from organizations that provide food resources for communities are seeing increases in the number of people who are showing up at food banks to stock their homes.
