COLUMBUS, Ohio — As federal lawmakers continue to debate a possible government shutdown, food insecurity is top of mind for many in central Ohio.
More than 300,000 people in the region rely on SNAP benefits to help put food on the table — and with next month’s payments uncertain , local food pantries are preparing for a possible surge in demand they’re not sure they can meet.
Every weekday morning, the Broad Street Food Pantry is filled with families picking up free groceries. But lately, meeting the growing need has become increasingly difficult.
“Since August, the need has gone up, but it’s remained up,” said Kathy Kelly-Long, director of the Broad Street Food Pantry.
The pantry serves around 300 families each week. But due to budget cuts, it’s receiving less food from the Mid-Ohio
