Jackie Robinson Ballpark is getting a major facelift, as the city invests millions to preserve the historic stadium and honor the baseball legend who broke the color barrier.
“We are celebrating a tradition of this city, Jackie Robinson Stadium. It's absolutely gorgeous,” Daytona Beach Commissioner Paula Reed said.
Robinson, the first African American man to play in Major League Baseball, made history at this very park, which has been a central part of the community for generations.
Len Moser, vice president of Barton Marlow, said the stadium holds a special place in baseball history.
“It's been here for 100 years, the oldest park in baseball. A lot of memories, a lot of history here that we read about, and now we're actually working on it. That's really, really cool,” he said.
