California stargazers are in for a rare celestial double feature. Two comets — C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) and C/2025 R2 (SWAN) — are now visible across the state, offering a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see icy visitors from the outer solar system. One of them, Comet Lemmon, currently the most luminous comet visible from Earth this year, won’t return for more than 1,300 years.

Whether you’re in the Bay Area, the Central Valley, or the desert, here’s what you need to know to make the most of this cosmic moment.

Northern California offers best shot at a naked-eye view of comets

Comet Lemmon is your prime target if you’re in the Bay Area or northward. It’s bright enough to glimpse without optical aid from darker sites about 45–60 minutes after sunset, glowing green against the twilight.
