LORAIN, Ohio -- Lorain City Council on Monday approved four ordinances allowing the city to accept state-funded traffic safety grants that strengthen local traffic enforcement and public safety measures.

The three grants total more than $235,000. Provided by the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Traffic Safety Office, the funding will support improved coordination between the Lorain Police Department and state safety offices and programs addressing speeding, seatbelt compliance and impaired driving.

Under the first two ordinances, council accepted a $83,053.48 grant for the Dedicated Traffic Enforcement Program and a $56,611.96 grant for the Impaired Driving Enforcement Program and Selective Traffic Enforcement Program. These programs focus on reducing traffic-related fatal crashes th
