The South Australian Attorney-General says the state's Parole Board "erred" in the decision to release Snowtown killer James Vlassakis on parole, as he calls for a review.

On Wednesday, the ABC revealed that the South Australian Attorney-General Kyam Maher had called for a review of the decision to release James Vlassakis on parole.

In August, the South Australian Parole Board announced its decision to release Vlassakis after he served 26 years of his life sentence.

In a statement released on Thursday, Mr Maher said he made an application for a review by the Parole Administrative Review Commissioner of the decision on the grounds that the Parole Board had "erred in granting the prisoner's release on parole".
