South Australia’s Attorney-General has challenged the Parole Board’s decision to release Snowtown killer James Vlassakis, claiming it made a mistake in granting parole.

Attorney-General Kyam Maher has formally requested a review of the Parole Board’s decision to release James Vlassakis, the youngest of the four men behind the gruesome “bodies-in-the-barrels” killings.

Mr Maher confirmed in a statement on Thursday that he had applied for a review, arguing the board “erred in granting the prisoner’s release on parole”.

He said the board “failed to give proper weight” to public safety, the seriousness of the offences, and Vlassakis’s likelihood of complying with parole conditions.

A directions hearing has been scheduled for October 31.
