It’s another setback for Ukraine at the hands of what should be its biggest defender in the world, the United States.

In his desire for the Nobel Peace Prize, President Trump wants to notch another cease-fire, and he made that pretty clear to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his meeting on Friday.

Trump told Mr. Zelensky to give up the disputed Donbas region, the territory that borders Russia and which is largely — though not entirely — under Russian control.

Despite occasionally drifting back in the direction of wanting to help Ukraine stave off a brutal Russian invasion, Trump has again snapped back to what appears to be his default position — help Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump refused to give Mr. Zelensky the Tomahawk missiles he was asking for.
