Commuters are facing significant delays this morning as a lorry fire has led to the closure of a major stretch of the A2. The eastbound lane from Gravesend to the M2 link near Rochester remains shut, causing extensive traffic disruptions during the busy rush hour. The National Highways has reported that the severity of the fire has rendered the area impassable for vehicles. Kent Fire and Rescue Service, along with Kent Police, are currently on the scene. Authorities have indicated that the A2 is expected to remain closed for several hours as they manage the situation. In response to the closure, a long diversion has been implemented, which is likely to add considerable time to commuters' journeys. Drivers are advised to exit the A2 coastbound at the Marling Cross junction for Gravesend (E). At the roundabout, they should take the second exit, followed by the first exit onto Valley Drive. Motorists must continue on Valley Drive for approximately two miles until reaching a traffic light-controlled T-junction. At this junction, they should turn right onto the B261 Old Road East. After passing through a roundabout with the A226, they will take the fourth exit onto the A226 eastbound towards Rochester. The diversion continues as drivers remain on the A226 for about 3.5 miles, passing through Higham, until they reach the A289 junction at Gads Hill Interchange. Non-motorway traffic should take the second exit, followed by the first exit to rejoin the A2. Those able to use the motorway should take the second exit at the first roundabout and the second exit again at the next roundabout to join the A289 southbound towards London/West Malling, before keeping left to access the M2. As a result of the incident, traffic is backing up eastbound on the A2 to the A227 junction near Gravesend, creating queues in both directions into Gravesend and towards Istead Rise and Hook Green. Additionally, rubberneckers have caused slow-moving traffic on the M2 westbound from Rochester. The M2 is typically busy during the morning rush hour as commuters head towards London. National Highways has warned drivers to expect delays and to plan their journeys accordingly.
