OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Uncertainty is growing in one of Oklahoma’s biggest industries after President Trump suggested importing beef from another country to bring down grocery store prices.

Oklahoma cattle ranchers told News 4 it’s leaving them unsure how to plan their businesses moving forward.

“There’s more cattle in the state of Oklahoma than there are people,” said cattle rancher and OKC West Livestock Market President Bill Barnhart.

But Barnhart says lately, the cattle herd’s been running thin across the country.

“The total cattle population is down through years of drought,” Barnhart said.

The scarcity, he says, is a big reason ranchers like T.J. Denwalt are paying top dollar for cattle at auction lately.

“Beef prices are as high as we’ve ever seen them,” Denwalt said.
