Every since his kids went to school in the 1990s, Robert Clear has been at Emerson Elementary each morning.

Clear could be found directing traffic, opening doors and greeting the students.

However, on Sept. 16, Mr. Bob, as the kids called him, didn't show up.

Clear was one of the three people run over by a hit-and-run driver. He ended up in the ICU with multiple broken bones.

Clear returned to the school Wednesday for the first time since being hit. During a lunchtime assembly, he received the Chris Kindness Award.

The monthly award was started three years ago by a UC Berkeley professor and gives a $1,000 to someone who lives, works, or goes to school in Berkeley and has demonstrated remarkable kindness.
