HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - After two months in Rarotonga , the crews of the Hokulea and Hikianalia have set sail once again.
The two voyaging canoes have been in the Cook Islands since Aug. 20 and began preparing for the next leg of the Moananuiakea Voyage just over a week ago.
They departed for Aotearoa, commonly known as New Zealand, on Tuesday.
The Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) said the crew for this leg of the Moananuiakea Voyage includes a mix of senior and younger navigators and crew.
PVS said the canoes are expected to reach Waitangi, on Aotearoa’s northeastern coast, in two weeks, and will mark 40 years since Hokuela first docked there in 1985.
Hokuela and Hikianalia last visited Waitangi in 2014 during the Worldwide Voyage.
