State and local officials are sounding off on the announcement last week that federal funding for the Cape Cod Canal Bridges Replacement Project could be in jeopardy. The potential loss of billions in federal funds would further delay the start of construction on the century-old Sagamore Bridge.

Russell Vought, director of the federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB), posted on X on October 17 that the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) would be “immediately pausing over $11 billion in lower-priority projects and considering them for cancellation.” Vought said that the pause in funding is due to the ongoing shutdown of the federal government.

The Sagamore and Bourne bridges are operated by the USACE and provide the only means of vehicular access and emergency evacuation from Cape Co
