A rare artwork has been stolen during a break-in at one of Liverpool 's most famous buildings.

Art thieves snatched a limited edition print of an sketch by former South African President Nelson Mandela from St George's Hall on Monday morning. Detectives say it may have been a targeted theft.

The artwork's frame was damaged during the theft and left at the scene. A man was seen leaving the Grade 1 listed building shortly after the incident at about 7.45am.

Merseyside Police have conducted a forensic examination of the scene and worked through hours of CCTV footage in and around the landmark building opposite Liverpool Lime Street Station.
