DOVER — This winter will mark the start of the demolition of the historic Gen. Sullivan Bridge, following approval of an approximately $28.5 million contract. Improving an existing bike and pedestrian path on the Little Bay bridges is moving ahead, too.

A project to replace the Gen. Sullivan Bridge superstructure with a separate bicycling and pedestrian bridge connecting Newington and Dover was officially called off in 2024 due to much the higher than expected cost. Bikers and walkers will instead get an upgraded path on the Little Bay bridges, which carry vehicular traffic between Dover and Newington along routes 4, 16 and the Spaulding Turnpike.
