Citizens celebrated Diwali with great enthusiasm this year, accompanied by an increase in the bursting of firecrackers. However, brief spells of rain in the evening brought temporary relief from pollution. Despite this, when compared to the air quality before Diwali, pollution levels on Laxmi Pujan day recorded an average increase of 11.1% , according to a study by the Thane Municipal Corporation’s Pollution Control Department . During the Diwali period, noise levels also rose by an average of 3.2% .
When compared with the 2024 Diwali period, air pollution levels this year have increased by 7.2%. Over the past three years, data show that the Air Quality Index (AQI) during Diwali rose by 62.6% in 2023 and by 33.9% in 2024.
