Tom Boyd, a 27-year-old man with autism, has secured a job at Asda after volunteering for over four years at Waitrose. Tom dedicated more than 600 hours to the Cheadle Hulme store in Greater Manchester, where he gained valuable work experience. However, complications arose when his mother, Frances, requested paid work for Tom as recognition for his commitment since 2021.
Frances reported that when she approached Waitrose about the possibility of paid shifts, the head office expressed concerns regarding the extent of Tom's unpaid work. Consequently, they informed her that his work experience placement would need to conclude. This left Tom unable to work for over two months, during which Frances chose not to disclose the reasons to him, instead telling him the store was undergoing cleaning.
Recently, Frances announced that Tom has been offered two five-hour paid shifts each week at Asda. She expressed her joy, stating, "We've had some great news - Asda have offered him two five-hour paid shifts a week." She also shared her gratitude for Asda's flexibility, noting, "How amazing that a company could do this. They are fine if at any time he is struggling."
Frances has been "overwhelmed" by the positive response to her son's story and the new opportunity at Asda. The family is hopeful that this new role will provide Tom with the recognition and support he deserves in the workplace.
