In the first sentence of her new book, A Welcome Home , Chicago-area designer Alex Kaehler mentions a detail from her upbringing that offers surprising insight into her work: As the child of a therapist, she explains, she grew up with a certain fluency in feelings. It’s no wonder, then, that the heartbeat of her eponymous firm’s work is rooted in crafting environments that are deeply in tune with how clients want their homes to make them feel. These are beautiful spaces, but also intentionally created backdrops for joy.
