A dangerous Diwali trend has exploded — literally. Over three days, more than across Madhya Pradesh were admitted to hospitals with severe blast and eye injuries after using crude “carbide guns” (also sold as “mini cannons”). At least , doctors say.

What are these “carbide guns”?

Improvised devices made from short plastic or tin pipes.

Filled with a mix of calcium carbide , match-stick heads (or home-made gunpowder) and other combustible material.

Ignited through a small port, they produce a violent chemical explosion that propels hot fragments, shrapnel and corrosive vapours directly toward users’ faces.
