Bill Clinton had a vision for America.

A balanced budget through deficit reduction and free trade. American leadership through global engagement. Reducing crime through increased police hiring and community policing. Welfare reform tied to work and opportunity expansion.

Put another way, socially liberal, fiscally conservative.

Clinton absolutely crushed it. He achieved the first budget surplus in 30 years. Crime fell dramatically by hiring more cops. Unemployment went from 7.3 percent to 4.2 percent, creating 22 million jobs. Homeownership among minorities increased. Black unemployment fell from 14 percent to below 8 percent. He appointed many women and minorities to significant roles, including Janet Reno as attorney general.
