Two Birmingham activists have been indicted on federal charges in connection with a fire deliberately set inside a Homewood Walmart during a Jabari Peoples protest.
Mercutio Southall, 41, and Lillian Jayne Colburn , are indicted in the Northern District of Alabama on a charge of arson, according to court documents unsealed Wednesday.
Both are also charged with first-degree arson and first-degree criminal mischief in state court.
The fire happened Aug. 22 at the Lakeshore Parkway Walmart Supercenter, and store officials reported the damage at $130,000, mostly from smoke and water.
The protest that day was held at Homewood Soccer Park where the 18-year-old Peoples was fatally shot by a Homewood police officer a month earlier.
Six other people were arrested that day on disorderly
