(WLNS) -- It's that time of year: Michigan State hosts Michigan this weekend for the annual Battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy.

Michigan State had an electric start to the season after defeating Boston College, a team the Spartans lost to last year, and Jonathan Smith became the first MSU head coach to start each of his first two seasons 3-0. Since then, however, very little -- if anything -- has gone right. The Spartans are 3-4 and have yet to win a conference game.

Losses to USC and Indiana are excusable, but MSU looked like a poorly-coached team against UCLA, who looked like they might not win a game all season until the Bruins shocked Penn State.
