RICHMOND, Va. — As millions of Americans are at risk of losing critical food assistance from the federal government next month due to the ongoing shutdown, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin has declared a state of emergency.
Earlier in the week, the City of Newport News said a letter was sent to Virginia from the USDA that stated November benefits for the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, known as SNAP or food stamps, have been paused nationwide until further notice.
Exactly when benefits will start to dry up will vary by state, unless the USDA taps into its contingency funds.
