PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two new overnight shelters are opening in Portland.

The city announced Thursday that it will open 280 recovery-oriented shelter beds to people experiencing homelessness and in recovery from substance abuse.

"As it gets colder at night, these shelters provide lifesaving beds for people sleeping outside," Mayor Keith Wilson said.

"Our goal is a warm, safe bed for every person, every night as we help our neighbors off the streets, and keep them off the streets."

The shelters are run by local nonprofits CityTeam Portland and Transition Projects, which will require guests to demonstrate a commitment to remaining clean and sober. No one under the influence will be allowed to enter, and no drugs or alcohol are permitted on site.
