Srinagar, Oct 23: National Conference (NC) president Dr Farooq Abdullah on Thursday said the Congress party continues to back the ruling alliance in Jammu and Kashmir for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, even as signs of unease surfaced between the two partners ahead of the crucial vote.
The remarks came a day after the Congress skipped a meeting of the coalition government’s MLAs called by the NC. The party accused the ally NC of reneging on an earlier understanding to allocate a “safe seat” to it in the Upper House polls, scheduled for Friday.
Speaking to reporters here, Abdullah downplayed talk of friction between the partners. “The Congress is with us and supports us,” he said when asked about the party’s silence on formally endorsing the NC candidates.
