Fans of the Toronto Blue Jays are demonstrating sportsmanship by supporting Seattle Children’s Hospital. As of Thursday afternoon, over 150 Blue Jays supporters had made donations to the hospital, according to spokesperson Sabrina Register.
"Seattle Children’s provides hope, care, and cures to help every child live the healthiest and most fulfilling life possible," Register stated. "Every donation to Children’s fuels our mission and is truly appreciated. Children’s is grateful to Blue Jays fans for their generosity. Moments like this highlight that we can all cheer for kids."
The initiative began when a Reddit user on the Blue Jays subreddit pledged to donate to the Seattle hospital if the Jays won the American League Championship Series. The Blue Jays secured their spot with a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners in Game 7 on Monday night. The following day, the Reddit user shared proof of their commitment with a $25 donation dedicated to the team.
Other fans quickly joined in, posting screenshots of their own donations. One user shared, "On behalf of my dad, who was a lifelong Blue Jays fan and a nurse at a children’s hospital here in Canada. He died October 1st of this year, just before the post-season started. He would have loved this series because it’s some damn good baseball."
Another fan commented, "Sorry the Jays won. You have a good team and did better than the Yankees!" Some Mariners fans have also expressed their gratitude, with a few posting messages on the Jays subreddit.
According to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, three donations have been received from American baseball fans. Additionally, the hospital reported that over $200,000 has been raised through its Blue Jays sweepstakes, which offers two tickets to a World Series game and a $5,000 prize.
A spokesperson for SickKids Hospital remarked, "It’s such a special moment for Toronto Blue Jays fans and our city, and we’re so grateful for baseball fans who choose to support children’s hospitals. We often see a small uptick in online donations during sports playoffs and championships, and it’s a heartwarming outcome from friendly rivalry."
The Blue Jays are set to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday night in Toronto.
